German engineering firm EDAG have rolled-out a preview debut showing prior to the upcoming March 5, 2009 Swiss Geneva Motor Show of it’s latest in-house concept car, the ” Light Car - Open Source”, which has revealed itself to be a eco - evolution in automotive design excellence.

-

Known as the “Light Car” this multi-media and light tech* green vehicle is a concept most likely never to be put into production as it is essentially a central platform showcasing advanced technologies in varied industries, many of which will eventually work there way into production vehicles.

-

The Light Car is designed with many exotic materials offering customizable features such as OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) head and taillights that the user can change the design, shape or style for example to suit their personal requirements and needs. The car’s tailgate is a large transparent display that for example in case of emergency beacons or a scrolling message on the tailgate. Just be sure if you ever tailgate an OLED car you may get hit with a nasty message scrolling over the rear end so be cautious who you follow.

-

The rolling chassis can be adapted to a variety of different styles and attributes by utilizing assorted body panels for various car design and style options for the user allowing for reduction in production costs. Four-wheel electric drive motors mounted in the wheel hubs  will be used for powering the on-board lithium-ion battery packs which will allow the cars range up to 150km per charge approximately.

-

Incorporating the “monovalent drive system,” this light car does not require a gasoline engine or a gearbox so the additional space allows for a spacey passenger compartment for such a compact exotic car.  Instrument clusters and controls are AMOLED (Active Matrix) and / or FOLED (Flexible) customizable displays programmeable by operator as they require for their specific driving needs.

-

The “light car” is lighter, super strong, green & fuel efficient, muliti-media friendly, OLED based within a huge platform to expand upon. The light car will be 4m (13.1ft) long, 1.7m ( 5.6ft) wide with the custom in-wheel motors this car will have a 2.9m (9.5ft) wheel base allowing for space for five passengers.

-

*”We have transferred today’s multimedia and lighting technology standards to the car, and in future want to offer the customer scope for free configuration, as the entire surface of the vehicle functions like the display of a multimedia installation, and can be used intelligently and individually,” said Johannes Barckmann, head of the EDAG Design Studio.

-

Now to get even more rarified EDAG brainiacs stayed true to their eco friendliness using for the car’s structure made by an Austrian company called ASA.Tec, made from a new type of basalt fiber composite material that become transparent when the panels are made. Basalt fibre is made of the minerals Olivine, Plagioclase, Pyroxene similar to to carbon fibre and fibreglass making it very strong with super specific tenacity that is 3x the strength over steel.

-

The car panels are totally recycleable embedded into a glass-like surface called ” Makrolon” which the OLED lights and displays are placed in the varied locations on the interior and exterior of the vehicle.

-

This project is in its early stages and the materials used in this concept vehicle are rare and exotic with high costs, the consensus is still out as too wether EDAG is looking to actually make this in the technical sense ” open source” where they are accepting collaboration from outside contributors or is simply EDAG making contacts within the industry to gather intelligence and establish business relationships with other relted firms to help them on technology issues.

Once the Geneva Auto Show opens March 5 we will be posting further details on what’s up with the EDAG “Open Source” Light car so be sure you bookmark us for updates to follow!
